Although a dynamic network of businesses and associations has sprung up all over France (see the Guide Gai Pied, issued yearly in June, about $10), the French G/L community is centered in Paris, where a large number of events take place.

You will find over one hundred G/L establishments, concentrated mostly in the Halles, Marais and Bastille areas. While the city has a relatively small number of discos, most of them small, it boasts a wide variety of bars, from cafés to hardcore leather clubs. You're sure to find something to please you, whatever your taste is. For eating, gay Paris offers a whole spectrum of dining experiences, from French fast food to fine cuisine and bistro atmosphere. There are very few G/L-dedicated accommodations, but many hotels are gay-friendly.

The best starting point should be the Centre Gai et Lesbien, in the Bastille area, where you can find lots of information, advice, maps and so on. If you prefer to explore Paris on your own, head for the junction of Rue Vieille du Temple and Rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie, half way between the Métro stations Saint-Paul and Hôtel-de-Ville; you will be in the middle of the gay Marais; just stroll around, and don't miss Les Mots à la Bouche, another place of choice to begin with. In most G/L businesses, you can also find free magazines which offer detailed listings of places and services in Paris.
