Public TransportationsMétro, Bus and RER (Réseau Express Régional) are operated by the RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens). Métro and RER trains run from 5:30am to 12:45am. Night buses (Noctambus) run hourly from Chatelet from 1:30am to 5am.Tickets sold by ten are cheaper (44F) than by one (7,50F); the carte orange is a week (Monday to Sunday) or month (1st to last day of the month) pass; an ID photo is needed; price depends on the number of travel zones. TelephoneMost public phones work only with cards ("télécartes", with 50 or 120 units) which are sold in tobacco shops, post offices and France Télécom stores.For international calls, dial 00 followed by the code of the country called. Within France, dial the 10-digit number, including the leading 0; from abroad, omit it. EmergenciesFor medical emergencies, dial 18 (fire/paramedic services). Ambulances can be contacted by dialing 15 (SAMU, Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente), police by dialing 17. Doctors can be reached at 47 07 77 77 or 43 37 77 77 (SOS Médecins).HostelsCentrale de Réservations (FUAJ-HI) provides same-day reservations in one of their affiliated youth hostels or budget hotels; it is open daily from 8am to 10pm, 4, boulevard Jules Ferry, métro République, Tel: 01 43 57 02 60.
Hostelling International (HI)There are three HI hostels in Paris, called Auberge de Jeunesse; the member price is about 100F. Reservations can be made through the Web.
Hôtel des Jeunes (MIJE)Housing in fine "hotels particuliers" of the Marais (4th arr.); about 110F per person, open 6am-1am, lockout 12pm-4pm, no reservation ; come early.
Centre International de Paris (BVJ)Open 6am - 2am daily; rooms available after 2:30pm. Doubles, triples, and quads 110F per person, including breakfast; singles (except at Paris Louvre) are 120F per person. No reservations; telephone or come by 8am.
MoneyBanks are open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4 or 5pm. Exchange offices are open seven days a week and have better hours. Paris has many automatic teller machines which take international credit cards, 24 hours a day. But be careful on week-ends, many machines can run out of money quickly.
IDsWe recommend that you always have your passport or an ID card on you; recent amendments to the law require all persons to present identification whenever called on to do so by police officers.Other general tourism information
