Cette carte dresse l'état des lieux, au 1er janvier 1997, du droit et du niveau d'acceptation sociale dont les gais et les lesbiennes bénéficient en Europe au 1er Janvier 1997. Elle amène ainsi à répartir les 40 Etats européens en 3 groupes selon les dispositions de leurs codes pénaux. Pour chacun des 3 groupes, elle distingue 2 sous-groupes selon le niveau d'acceptation sociale des gais et des lesbiennes. Elle ne doit pas occulter les inévitables nuances entre les pays d'un même sous-groupe liées aux spécificités politiques et socio-culturelles nationales.

This map shows the situation regarding our rights and the level of social acceptance of lesbians and gay men across Europe, as at January 1, 1997. It shows how we can divide the 40 European states into 3 categories, according to the way their penal code work. For each of these three categories, the map highlights two groups of countries, according to the extent to which lesbians and gay men are accepted into society. (The map is inevitably a simplification of the current situation and cannot show all of the subtle distinctions which exist between countries as a result of their specific political and socio-cultural characteristics).
